Northwest Arrivals...
Evening Landing 2009 Celebration Gamay Noir - The Celebration 2009 Gamay Noir Eola-Amity Hills is a clear, light ruby red in the glass with muted plum fruit on the nose along with hints of licorice and fennel. In the mouth, this Oregon gamay noir offered decent fruit with an herbaceous finish. Pairs nicely with grilled Korean sesame chicken, baby bok choy, and steamed rice. The acidity in this wine matches well with Asian cuisine.

Walter Scott 2009 Deux Blanc - Walter Scott was started in 2008 by partners Ken Pahlow and Erica Landon. The 2009 Duex Blanc is a blend of 75% Pinot Blanc from Larkins Estate Vineyard with 25% Pinot Gris from the Carabella Vineyard. It is made to be a fresh, fun wine with good balance, to be enjoyed in the sun while enjoying summer fare.
• Hawk’s View 2009 Pinot Gris - The 2009 Hawks View Pinot Gris offers notes of peach, orange peel and marzipan. The palate is rich and full with a long, voluminous finish.

Hawk’s View 2008 Pinot Noir - The 2008 Hawks View Pinot Noir offers plum, blackberry, and caramel notes which extend to the palate of crushed raspberries, baking spice, and cola.

Willakenzie 2009 Pinot Blanc - The 2009 Pinot Blanc opens with aromas of exotic fruits, including grapefruit, gooseberry, guava and pineapple, along with perfumed honeysuckle, jasmine and orange blossom, with a hint of lemongrass. On the palate, this wine has flavors of honeydew, juicy grapefruit, green apple and stone fruits, marked with an initial richness and a hint of sweetness that evolves into a bright, fresh acidity. Enjoy this wine by itself as an aperitif, or pair it with raw sushi, shellfish, Thai Food, and pasta primavera.

Willakenzie 2009 Pinot Gris - There are 18.4 acres of Pinot Gris planted in several different locations on the Estate. Because the goal is to produce white wines that fully express the characteristics of the fruit, this Pinot Gris is made entirely in stainless steel, with no malolactic fermentation and no barrel aging. The wine is made in the Alsatian style: lush, rich and mouth filling.

Willakenzie 2007 Thibaud’s Cuvee - The Cuvée offers attractive aromas of red fruit, with hints of nutmeg and pleasing earthiness. The flavors match the aromas with fresh cherry and cranberry followed by subtle darker notes of blueberry and blackberry. The palate impression is refined yet refreshing with bright acidity and hints of citrus and caramel on the finish. This medium bodied wine is extremely food friendly and will pair with a great variety of dishes including roasted poultry, salmon, lighter meats such as pork or veal, and charcuterie.

Anne Amie Cuvee A 2009 Muller Thurgau - This estate-grown Müller-Thurgau comes from vines first planted in 1979. It exudes aromas of musk melon, green apples and white flowers. On the palate there are hints of star fruit, lemon drops, passion fruit and granny smith apples. It is crisp, fresh, minerally and dry, it is a charming example of the variety at its best. From chicken to shellfish, this wine is a versatile match for mildly spicy foods like Thai, Creole, or Mexican.

International Arrivals ….
Finca el Reposo 2009 Bonardo - Made from a grape that's little-known outside its native Piedmont, Italy, this Argentine wine is a convincing rendition. Its refined aroma has suggestions of blackberry. On the palate, it's medium-bodied and well-balanced with natural acidity. The finish is relatively short.

Aforado 2009 Albarino - Pale, bright gold. Spicy lemon and lime aromas are deepened by pear and anise qualities. Refreshingly bitter and precise, offering tangy citrus and pear skin flavors, with good mineral bite on the back. Fleshier peach and melon flavors arrive on the juicy, persistent finish. Delicious and complex wine, with the vivacity to drink by itself and the depth to accompany strongly flavored seafood dishes.

Gruet 2006 Blanc de Blancs - The Blanc de Blancs offers abundant aromas and flavors recalling sweet apples, pears and citrus. The four years of aging has contributed a pronounced classic toastiness with accents of roasted almonds and minerals. The palate is creamy and long, and the style is elegant, dry and crisp, with great complexity.

The Cellar on 10th has moved up from its 2004 Outstanding Oregon Wine List Award to the "big daddy" of them all, the Outstanding Northwest Wine List Award.

  • The following is the article that appears in the magazine:
    OUTSTANDING NORTHWEST WINE LISTS
The Cellar on 10th, Astoria, Ore.
MIKE WALLIS' restaurant and cellar sits at the mouth of the Columbia, and the list runs as the Columbia does, seemingly with Washington and Oregon representations split down the middle. Those looking for current vintages certainly won't be disappointed. There are seven from Barnard Griffin on top of eight from Beaux Freres. Near the bottom, Winter's Hill is followed by Woodward Canyon. There's also B.C. representation with ice wines from Mission Hill and Inniskillin.
